A word on travel insurance cover variations

There are certain things in travel that sound optional until they very much aren’t. Travel insurance cover variations fall neatly into this category.

Snow sports, adventure activities and motorbike riding are not fringe cases; they are some of the most common reasons a perfectly good claim becomes a disappointing conversation. And those conversations, more often than not, begin with: “I didn’t realise I needed extra cover.”

Let’s talk about them properly.

Snow Sports or Snow Sports Plus

If you are going anywhere near snow with intentions of snowboarding, snowmobiling or skiing, snow sports cover is required. Not sometimes. Not “just for the big days”. Always.

A person rides a snowboard down a snowy slope. Snow-covered trees are seen in the background. The sun shines brightly as the skier wears a helmet and protective gear.

This applies whether you’re:

  • Skiing, snowmobiling or snowboarding for a week
  • Having a single afternoon lesson
  • Hiring equipment or bringing your own

Adventure Activities or Adventure Plus

Adventure cover is where assumptions flourish. It is easy to cheerfully assume canyon swings, high-altitude trekking or scuba diving are “nothing too extreme”, while we quietly disagree.

If you’re booking organised adventure activities, this cover ensures you’re protected if something goes wrong during those experiences.

Motorcycle/Moped riding or Motorcycle/Moped riding Plus

Mopeds have a way of appearing harmless, particularly in warm climates. Many travellers do not know that they need to add cover to their policy even if they are a passenger on a motorbike or moped, especially as many local taxi services use mopeds. Even experienced riders can face challenges, as traffic rules and road conditions can vary greatly from country to country.

To be covered you must:

  • Be on a bike with an engine capacity that suits the level of cover you have purchased
  • Hold a valid Australian motorcycle or Australian motor vehicle driver’s licence if you are the driver (Motorcycle/Moped riding on bikes up to 250cc)
  • Or, hold a valid Australian motorcycle licence (Motorcycle/Moped riding Plus for bikes above 250cc) if you are the driver
  • Be wearing a helmet

“But I’m only doing it once”

Unfortunately, it only takes one moment for something unexpected to happen. Travel insurance does not measure frequency, only what occurred in that moment.

Cover isn’t based on how often you do an activity, only that it happens at all.

Something to remember

Cover variations are quiet safeguards. And in travel, as in life, it is far better to be prepared than surprised.
